Making the Rounds in Indy

Zoo Advisors again has you covered for AZA2017 in Indianapolis. Our growing team will be busy facilitating sessions, hosting events, and catching up with new clients and old friends at this year’s conference. This year, we are pleased welcome Dr. Eric Miller to our team as Senior Counsel. Many of you know Eric and his work at The Saint Louis Zoo where he continues to direct their Wildcare Institute. We are pleased to add his wealth of knowledge and expertise particularly in the conservation and animal care arenas to ZA’s talent roster.

Our whirlwind visit to Indy includes –


David Walsh, ZA’s President, will be facilitating a discussion with four zoo and aquarium Directors from Cleveland, Lincoln Park, Calgary, and Mandalay Bay, on the topic –

Mission Forward: What’s it take to really be a “conservation first” organization
Navigating the path to finding focus, funding, and your brand platform

Women in Leadership: Are We There Yet?

It is also on Wednesday morning at 8AM.


  • ZA will be hosting a luncheon for Directors of Zoo Support Organizations on Monday, September 11th with Jamie Cornell, of DIVE Leadership Consulting, as a featured speaker.

  • ZA is kicking off an exclusive event for Next Gen Leaders on Monday night to bring together those up and coming professionals in our field over signature craft cocktails.

  • In what has become an annual tradition, ZA will host a dinner of women zoo and aquarium leaders on Tuesday evening. We’re proud to bring together our largest group to date with close to 40 women in attendance.

The Food Scene in Indianapolis

For those of you who know us, you know the ZA team are foodies. We are always on the lookout for the hottest places in all the towns we travel to. If you’re looking for dining tips in Indy, here are some ideas to get you started. (Special thanks to Greg Loewen from Emmis/Digonex, the Dynamic Pricing experts, and based in Indianapolis, for the tips.)

  • Indy is full of steakhouses. Favorites include Prime 47 (great vibe in the restaurant) and the famous St. Elmo’s. Ironically, St. Elmo’s is known around the world for their shrimp cocktail.

  • Hip and hot dinner spots include – Bluebeard; Vida (quieter); Union 50 (bit more boisterous); and Tinker Street

  • Breakfast places are big in Indy, if you’re looking to get out of the hotels, try Café Patachou, about a five minute walk from the main conference hotel. Also try Milktooth with its very eclectic menu for breakfast or lunch
